Parents /Guardians of Wilmot High School,
Our school district has been randomly selected to participate in the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The YRBS has been administered to South Dakota students in grades 9 through 12 since 1991 to assess priority health-risk behaviors including (1) behaviors that result in unintentional injuries and violence, including suicide; (2) tobacco use; (3) alcohol and other drug use; (4) sexual behaviors that could contribute to HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintentional pregnancies; (5) dietary behaviors; and (6) physical activity. The survey results provide important data needed to develop targeted prevention and early intervention programs and allow monitoring of progress toward prevention and intervention goals.
I understand the number one concern while taking a state survey would be your child’s privacy. With that, I want to ensure you the Department of Health enforces different survey administration procedures designed to protect the privacy and anonymity of each participating student. No names or other identifying information will be collected, and all answers are combined and all question results will be presented as an aggregate figure – making it impossible to identify an individual student respondent in any reports. Another safety measure for privacy would be that teachers administer this survey after signing a confidentiality form, ensuring that they remain in the front of the room and monitor behavior to ensure students are not sharing their answers with others.
As your School Counselor, I do support participating in the survey because it shines a light on students’ experiences so that parents, districts, and schools can provide the most appropriate resources for any challenges.
We will administer this survey in school on October 5, 2023 during the school day. Each student will login and do the survey on the respective survey page.
Thank you for your attention and consideration to this important survey that will benefit our youth for years to come. If you prefer your student not to participate in this survey, please visit with Mrs. Ronke for more information.
